What are friend codes and friend lists?

A friend code is a unique numeric code that allows a player to communicate directly with a friend’s Nintendo 3DS family system. When two people have exchanged friend codes, they can find each other online on their system's friend list, which displays a list of all registered friends. On Wii U, players who have registered each other as friends can find each other online on the friend list. In some supported software titles, it is possible to join a friend's play session directly through the friend list.

By accessing the friend list, you can see which of your registered friends are currently online, their Mii and which games they are playing. Users can also enter a short personal message which will appear in a speech bubble by their Mii.

On Nintendo 3DS family systems, it's also possible to select a "Favourite Title" which will be displayed as part of your profile.

On the Wii U friend list, you can view a list of users that you have played online multiplayer titles with recently.

We encourage you to instruct your children never to give out their friend code or Nintendo Network ID to strangers, nor to post them on Internet forums.
