    Game type definitions

If you're unsure what a few of the types of games are all about, here's a handy list to help out!

In role-playing games (RPGs), the player takes control of a specific character and often becomes involved in deep storylines in large game worlds. Progress is made through a combination of exploration and taking part in battles, which in RPG games are a matter of strategy than actual "fighting" action. In a battle, a player with an Attack level of "4" will beat a player with a Defence level of "3", for example. Some RPGs also allow you to customise your character. The Pokémon games are examples of role-playing games.

Puzzle games come in loads of forms, but the general idea is the same: they're all about making you think. Some puzzle titles, such as Tetris, involve moving blocks into place to complete lines, while in match-3 games the objective is to place like-pieces next to each other to clear them from the board. Other puzzle games are less reaction based; hidden object titles, for example, challenge you to find items disguised amongst backgrounds.

Simulation games let players experience life from different points of view. For example, you can act out an alternative, crazier version of life in games like Tomodachi Life. Other simulation games might involve building and planning; games such as Harvest Moon give you the chance to create and manage your own farm.

Platformers are among the easiest games to hop into: they're literally about jumping from platform to platform! Usually platformers will include plenty of things to collect, and the goal is often to simply reach the end of a level. There are often enemies to defeat along the way, too! Titles in the New Super Mario Bros. series are good examples of platformers.
