How to Purchase or Extend a Nintendo Switch Online Membership on Nintendo Switch

Instructions on purchasing a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Additional Information:

  • You can choose between an individual membership and a family membership:
    • An individual membership provides the service to the Nintendo Account user that purchases the membership.
    • A family membership provides the service to everyone in the purchaser's Nintendo Account family group (up to 8 people).
  • You can purchase multiple memberships of the same kind (individual or family) to extend the overall validity period of your membership.
  • If you already belong to a family membership, you cannot purchase, redeem a download code for, or change to an individual membership.
  • Family and individual membership validity periods cannot be combined - if you purchase one of each, you will receive whichever validity period is longer. (For more information, click here.)

Complete These Steps:

  1. Select "Nintendo eShop" on the HOME Menu to launch Nintendo eShop.
  2. Select the account you want to use.
  3. Select "Nintendo Switch Online" on the left side of the screen.
  4. Select "Membership Options" to see the current membership pricing and plans.

Are you using a prepaid Nintendo Switch Online download code?


  1. Scroll down to "Redeem Code" and select "Enter".
  2. Enter the 16-digit download code for the Nintendo Switch Online membership, then select "OK".
    • Any letters and symbols not used with prepaid codes (i.e. O, I, Z, commas, hyphens, etc.) will be disabled from the on-screen keyboard.
  3. Select "Confirm" to complete the transaction.
  4. Choose the payment method for automatic renewal you would like to set for the membership (credit card, PayPal, or Nintendo eShop funds).
    • Your membership will be set to renew automatically using your available Nintendo eShop balance when the validity period of your membership ends. If you have selected "Credit Card" or "PayPal", any additional funds will be charged to the payment method you chose. Automatic renewal is unavailable for Nintendo Accounts under the age of 18.

  1. Choose the membership plan you want to purchase, then select "Proceed to Purchase".
    • To purchase a family membership, you must be aged 18+ and have a credit card or PayPal account.

How do you want to pay for the Nintendo Switch Online membership?


  1. Select "Credit Card".
  2. Enter the credit card number, expiry date, security code and billing address, then select "Next".
    • If you are using saved credit card information, you will not need to re-enter the credit card information to complete the purchase.
    • Nintendo Account owners aged 18+ can click the "Save" box on the credit card entry screen to store credit card information.
  3. Select "Add funds and purchase" to complete the purchase.
    • Your membership will automatically be set to auto-renew using your Nintendo eShop funds. Any additional balance will be charged to the payment method you used to place the order. The auto-renew feature is unavailable for Nintendo Accounts under the age of 18.

  1. Select "PayPal."
  2. Link your PayPal account to your Nintendo Account, if you have not already done so.
  3. Select "Purchase" to complete the purchase.
    • Your membership will bet set to renew automatically using your Nintendo eShop funds. Any additional balance will be charged to the payment method you used to place the order. Automatic renewal feature is unavailable for Nintendo Accounts under the age of 18.

  1. Select "Funds Only".

Are there enough funds to complete the purchase?


  1. Select "Purchase" to complete the purchase.
    • Your Nintendo Switch Online membership will be set to renew automatically using your Nintendo eShop funds. Automatic renewal is unavailable for Nintendo Accounts under the age of 18.
