    Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Update History

    Update Details:

    Click the version number below for information about older software updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Each update also includes all previous updates.

    Version 2.2.1

    Fixed Issues

    • Fixed an issue where, when playing online in Berlin Byways, the picture would get choppy.
    • Fixed an issue where, when playing in London Loop, the player would not be returned to the appropriate location if they fell off the course and were lifted back by Lakitu.

    Version 2.2.0

    Support for DLC

    • Now supports paid DLC: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, wave 3 (two cups and eight courses).

    General

    • Added Custom Items to item rules.
      • This is a feature that lets you decide which items will appear.
      • This is supported in VS Race, Balloon Battle, Coin Runners, Shine Thief, Renegade Roundup, Friends and Rivals, tournaments and Wireless Play.
      • Items that have not been set to appear may still appear depending on the connection environment and game situation.
    • When getting struck by lightning while gliding through the air, the glider will no longer close.
    • The period of invincibility after spinning or crashing now changes depending on the driver and vehicle.
    • When a user cannot download any new ghost data, they can now delete all the ghost data they'd downloaded up to that point.
    • Removed Recommended in tournaments.

    Fixed Issues

    • Fixed an issue where coins would not be added when touching an opponent's Crazy Eight coin.
    • Fixed an issue where there was a communication error when using the item Boo.
    • Fixed an issue where using the Super Horn would not hit more than one opponent at the same time.
    • Fixed an issue where images in Mario Circuit 3 would look distorted.
    • Fixed an issue where a player could not acquire multiple items in a row in Snow Land.
    • Fixed an issue where points would not be added to a member list when spectating in an online match.
    • Fixed an issue where, when selecting a team, the COM characters that actually play in the game were not the same as shown on the selection screen.
    • Fixed an issue where the warning sound was not playing when a Red Shell or Spiny Shell approached from behind.
    • Other adjustments and corrections were made to improve the gameplay experience.

    Version 2.1.0

    DLC Support

    • Now supports paid DLC: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, wave 2 (two cups and eight courses).

    General

    • Increased the number of ghosts you can download from 16 to 32.
    • Adjusted the extent to which a vehicle is thrown, depending on its weight.
    • Further shortened the time it takes for item boxes to regenerate after another player takes them.
    • Shortened the time it takes for one player to be able to pick up a coin that another player has dropped.
    • Made it so that it is easier to face in the forward direction in mid-air when using Smart Steering.
    • The cars that the Shy Guys are riding in in Wii Coconut Mall now move from time to time in all modes other than the Time Trial mode.

    Fixed Issues

    • Fixed an issue where players could not choose a DLC course even though a player in the lobby in Friends and Rivals had the Booster Course Pass.
    • Fixed an issue where players did not receive coins even though they used the Feather in Coin Runners to steal a rival’s coins.
    • Fixed an issue where players could receive two items from one item box in N64 Toad's Turnpike.

    Version 2.0.0

    DLC Support

    • The eight courses included in wave 1 of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass are now supported.
    • If someone in a group of players has the Booster Course Pass, all players can select one of the available DLC courses.
      • Supported in the Friends and Rivals, Wireless Play and LAN Play modes.
    • Starting 22 March, you can select courses from the Booster Course Pass in online play.
      • Supported in the Global, Regional and Tournament modes.
      • Even if a player does not have access to the Booster Course Pass, they can play courses from the pass randomly when playing online.

    General

    • Shortened the time it takes for an item box to regenerate when it gets taken by someone else.

    Fixed Issues

    • Fixed an issue where a communication error occurs when 12 people are matched during online play.
      • You will need to download the latest update data in order to play online.
      • If you download the latest update data, you will not be able to play the Wireless Play or LAN Play modes with other players who are using data from a previous update.
    • The update data contains fixes made to improve gameplay experience and other content that is not listed here.
    • In order to download the update data, you will need enough space in your system memory or on a microSD card.

    Version 1.7.2

    • Addressed an issue that caused tournament points to be reset.
    • Addressed an issue that caused match history with friends to be reset.

    Version 1.7.1

    • Fixed an issue that caused the game to become unresponsive to any input except for the HOME Button.

    Version 1.7.0

    • Now compatible with the Toy-Con Car from Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit.
      • You can select which Toy-Con to use from Toy-Con settings in the main menu.
    • Now compatible with the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app.
      • If the application is running on your device when you enter an online match, you will automatically receive a prompt on your smartphone asking if you would like to join a voice chat with your opponent.
      • The global, regional, Friends and Rivals, and tournament options allow you to use this function.

    Version 1.6.0

    • New character added: Link (Champion's Tunic)
    • New vehicle added: Master Cycle Zero
    • New tyres added: Ancient Tyres
    • New glider added: Paraglider
    • Update includes revisions to improve gameplay, as well as some content not listed here.

    Version 1.5.0

    • Now supports the use of the Toy-Con Motorbike from Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit.
      • You can now set whether or not to use the Toy-Con Motorbike from the Toy-Con settings in the main menu.

      • On the screen right before the game begins, please set the Joy-Con controllers inside the Toy-Con Motorbike.

      • When using the Toy-Con Motorbike, the camera will look over the character’s shoulder, increasing immersion.

      • Press the downward directional button to play with normal view again.

    • Addressed an issue where, after setting up a tournament, the Search Using a Code feature would stop functioning.
    • Addressed an issue that made it impossible for a player to proceed after colliding with a Star Thwomp.
    • The latest update data is needed to play matches online.
    • Once you have downloaded the latest update data, you will no longer be able to play Wireless Play and LAN Play matches with other players who have not downloaded this data.

    Version 1.4.0

    • Language support for Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean has now been implemented.
      • You can change the language via System Settings on your console.
    • An issue has been resolved that prevented background music from playing after you reach the finish line.
    • When you download update data (Ver.1.4.0), you will no longer be able to engage in wireless play or LAN play with those still using Version 1.2.1 or earlier.

    Version 1.3.0

    • Video capture compatibility added. Hold the Capture Button to capture up to 30 seconds of the previous footage.
      • The system must be updated to version 4.0.0 or higher to use this feature.
    • Now more difficult to float down using the glider when Smart Steering is ON.
    • Spiny Shells no longer hit the second place player when the first place player hasn’t yet crossed the finish line.
    • Extended the invulnerability period after spinning out or crashing.
    • Changes made to online play prior to version 1.2.1 now apply to wireless play and LAN play as well:
      • When further back in a race, will receive better items to help catch up to other players.
      • No more than one Piranha Plant will appear at a time.
      • Updating to version 1.3.0 will prevent users from using wireless play or LAN play with users who have version 1.2.1 or lower.

    Version 1.2.1

    • Corrected an issue that prolonged the time to return to the lobby after races near the start and end times of online tournaments.

    Version 1.2.0

    • Players can use Pikmin-themed amiibo to unlock a Pikmin Suit for the Mii driver.
    • Race rules and course name are now displayed on loading screens for online and wireless play, as well as Mario Kart TV.
    • Players who are behind in online matches will receive items geared toward catching up more frequently.
    • In online matches, no more than two Piranha Plants will be granted as items at the same time.
    • Controls are no longer unresponsive when the timer runs out when choosing a Mii racing suit for online matches.
    • When a player uses an item right after the Super Horn in online matches, that item will now remain available for other players.
    • Item wheel no longer spins continuously in online matches.
    • Online matches now end as intended 30 seconds after the first place racer finishes.
    • The boomerang now returns to the first slot, if possible, after a player catches it.
    • Items shown in a player’s item slots now display correctly when holding an item behind them.
    • No longer possible to use an item after it has been used to block an attack.
    • Communication errors no longer occur frequently while spectating or after spectating online matches.

    Version 1.1.0

    • Opponents’ names are displayed in the rear view mirror view in online matches.
    • Invincibility period after a spin-out or crash is longer in online matches.
    • Up to two players can spectate a friend group while they wait to join.
    • “Global” and “Regional” modes add players to Mirror and 200cc matches less often.
    • Can now properly create a friend lobby when you have 100 or more friends.
    • Inkling Girl’s animation has been adjusted.
    • Starting positions in online races now properly reflect the order in which players join.
    • Driver Mii characters now properly showing facial expressions.
    • Tournament clock now properly reflects real-world time.
