Instructions for how to update Mario Tennis Aces.

On 15 April 2019 a new software update for Mario Tennis Aces will become available for download. Please take a moment to download and install this update while your Nintendo Switch console is connected to the internet.

Additional Information:

  • This update must be applied in order to use the game’s online features.
  • Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.
  • If the console is connected to the internet, the update will download and install automatically.
  • Once your game is updated, you will not be able to do local play or LAN play with players who have an earlier version.

Complete These Steps:

  1. Connect the Nintendo Switch console to the internet.
  2. Return to the HOME Menu and launch the game.
  3. The update will be downloaded and installed automatically.
  4. Once the update is installed, the newest version number will be displayed on the title screen.

Version 3.0.0

  • New Mode: “Ring Shot”
    • Added Ring Shot, a new mode in which you compete for a high score by aiming for rings that appear on the court while maintaining a rally.
    • This includes three game modes: Ring Shot Singles, Ring Shot Doubles, and Yoshi's Ring Shot, which can be played by up to four people on one Nintendo Switch console at the same time. Each game mode features a co-op mode that allows you to cooperate with another player to maintain a rally as you aim for a high score. They also include Beginner Co-op Challenge through Advanced Co-op Challenge, in which you compete for a high score by hitting more balls through rings than your opponent in order to clear the level.
    • Ring Shot Singles and Ring Shot Doubles can be played on all courts with hazards. Furthermore, hazard effects have been added to Ring Shot gameplay to create a wider variety of ways to play.
    • When you clear Advanced VS Challenge in Yoshi’s Ring Shot, you can get a purple Yoshi to use in regular matches. This is the only way to get this purple Yoshi.
  • Co-op Challenge: Yoshi’s Ring Shot
    • This Co-op Challenge will be available again from the distribution of version 3.0.0 until 09:00 on 1 June 2019. Co-op Challenge is a mode for online play available only for a certain period of time.
      • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Co-op Challenge.
    • Yoshi’s Ring Shot adds a twist to the regular Ring Shot rules - you’ll earn four times as many points if you hit a ball through a ring that’s the same colour as the Yoshi you’re controlling.
    • A four-player team is formed among friends or players online to achieve an objective together.
      • If each player has a controller, up to four players can play on a single Nintendo Switch console.
      • If there aren’t four total players, the necessary number of COM players will be added after a certain amount of time has passed.
    • You can acquire three Yoshis of different colours (pink, light blue and orange) by completing objectives.
  • Added Opening Movie to Adventure Mode
    • Added an opening movie to Adventure Mode.
    • A new opening movie will play when starting a new match for the first time. Even if you’ve already started up Adventure Mode, you can see this opening movie any time by selecting Bonus from the Adventure Mode menu and then selecting Opening (Ver. 3) for the new movie, or Opening (Ver. 2) for the previous movie.
      • To see bonus content other than the opening movies, you must clear Adventure Mode.
  • Changes to Character Abilities
    • The abilities of certain characters have been changed.

      • Increased her ability to aim for the edges of the sideline.
      Bowser Jr.
      • Slightly increased his ability to aim for the edges of the sideline.
      • Made it a little harder to slip when moving.

      • Slightly increased Birdo's ability to aim for the edges of the sideline.
      Boo
      • Slightly increased how long time is frozen for after leaping for a ball.
      Mario
      • Slightly increased the power of his volley shots.
      Spike
      • Slightly increased the power of his volley shots.
      Wario
      • Slightly decreased the how long time is frozen for after leaping for a ball.
      Chain Chomp
      • Slightly decreased his ability to aim for the edges of the sideline.
      • Slightly decreased the strength of his slice return.
  • Added New Rank, “Ace”, to Online Tournament
    • Added the new rank “Ace” to the existing D- to A+ scale, with Ace being the highest. The Ace rank is for players with a rating of 5,000 or greater.
    • Ace players will be matched against opponents with the same rating as A+.
  • Added Settings
    • When playing with two or more players in Free Play or Swing Mode, you can now choose the option Service (which side will serve first). You can choose from Random, P1 Side Serves, or P1 Side Receives whether you’re playing in Singles or Doubles.
      • However, this setting is only possible when people are playing against each other. A team with two COM players will always start receiving. When only one person is playing, the Service settings menu will not appear.
    • Before character selection in Free Play or Swing Mode, you can now select the same character as your opponent when your doubles partner has been decided. This is under Doubles Partner when selecting P1 and P2, or when selecting Team in Local Play and Online Play.
      • In a future update, we plan to add a “Select every time” menu option for Doubles Partners, so that you can select the same character as your opponent when your partner has been decided even before character selection.
  • Adjustments to the Shot System
    • Added a visual effect when players use Zone Speed. Also made the Zone Speed motion effect only appear for the character that initiated Zone Speed.
      • The player who is not showing the motion effect can still recover half of their energy by successfully completing a block without using Zone Speed.
    • Changed smash point colour from yellow to turquoise when Zone Shot can be activated (when energy is 1/3 or greater and the character is in a rotating star).
    • When a Special Shot becomes available to play during a match, the character’s icon will switch to the L Button icon.
    • Text guide for shot controls will be displayed for Adventure Mode Pipe Gripe, Adventure Mode Battle Boat, and COM Tournament Mushroom Cup Round 1 (only when Toad’s commentary is disabled).
  • Other Changes
    • Inferno Island: The Mechakoopas that appear when hazards are turned on will increase their numbers at a slower rate in Doubles.
    • Savage Sea: A fault will occur when a serve hits the base of the post which is present when hazards are turned on.
    • An Ancient Trial: The smash point will appear by way of a contraption where a flat shot is necessary.
    • Swing Mode: The ball will get smaller after every 10 shots instead of every 30 shots when playing in Swing Mode Rally Challenge.
    • Online Tournament: Changed sound effects when your rank improves.
    • Main Menu: The main menu’s background will not change from a normal background even when a Co-op Challenge is being held.
    • Other adjustments have been made to improve gameplay and fix issues.

Version 2.3.0

  • 3rd Co-op Challenge: Shy Guy Train Tussle!
    • The new Co-op Challenge, Shy Guy Train Tussle, will be available from the start of version 2.3.0 distribution until 09:00 on 15 April 2019. Co-op Challenge is a mode for online play which will only be held for a certain period of time.
      • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Co-op Challenge.
    • Shy Guy Train Tussle is played in Swing Mode. You’ll work with other players to get back coins stolen by Shy Guy bandits.
      A four-player team of friends or online players is formed, and your goal is to complete the objective together. (If each player has a controller, up to four players can play on one Nintendo Switch console.)
      You can acquire three Shy Guys of different colours (blue, green and yellow) by completing objectives.
    • If there aren’t four total players, the necessary number of COM players will be added after a certain amount of time has passed.
  • New Characters and Costumes Added
    • If you play at least one match of the March Online Tournament, you’ll be able to use the new character Pauline. Pauline is fast, and can accelerate faster than other characters. However, changing direction while accelerating is difficult, and she’s more easily pushed back by returned balls.
      • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Online Tournament.
      • Pauline will become available to use as of 09:00 on 1 April 2019, even if you haven’t played one match of the March Online Tournament.
    • If you play a match in the March Online Tournament and collect the necessary bonus points, you’ll be able to use a Chain Chomp with a hat. The hat is available in three colours.
      • Only people who earn the necessary amount of points in March will acquire the Chain Chomp with a hat.
      • This Chain Chomp has the same abilities as a regular Chain Chomp.
      • Bonus points will be reset the following month.
    • Additional new characters and costumes are planned for April and later.
  • Changes to Character Abilities

      Character Name Change

      Birdo

      • Slightly increased the volley shot speed.

      Boom Boom

      • Slightly decreased the speed of his volley shot.
      • Greatly decreased his ability to aim for the edges of the sideline.
      • Slowed down overall abilities related to movement.
      • Slowed down the distance he can return a ball using a longitudinal Trick Shot.

      Luma

      • Made it a little easier to slip when moving.
      • Slightly decreased the top movement speed.
  • Other Changes
    • Online Tournament: Fixed problem on the screen where you pair up in Doubles Class in which there’s a low probability of P1 and the host being displayed and then the software shuts down.
    • Snowfall Mountain: Adjusted behaviour of playable character getting greatly pushed back when swinging racket and contacting passengers who appear when there are hazards.
    • Inferno Island: Made it so that shots during a rally will not hit a duct when the settings for hazards is turned on.
    • Co-op Challenge: Adjusted motion when using Chain Chomp during a Co-op Challenge using Swing Mode.
    • Fixed an issue with the animation wherein hitting a drop shot would become the same motion as when hitting a topspin.
    • Other adjustments have been made to improve gameplay.

Version 2.2.0

  • Changes to Menu
    • Added Court Selection screen to Free Play and Swing Mode. If you go to Change Rules and choose Select every time under Court, the Court Selection screen will appear after the character selection screen.
      • You will still be able to choose All, Stadium Only, or Custom.
    • The character selection screen for Online Tournament, Standard Class, and Simple Class will start with the cursor on the character you used last time.
    • Changed the menu flow after an Online Tournament match is done.
  • System Changes
    • Changed amount of energy increase from pulling off a successful block when the doubles partner is using Zone Speed to half the amount of a successful block without the use of Zone Speed.
      • Using Zone Speed in Singles and pulling off a successful block or Trick Shot will not restore energy, but it will restore energy when your partner uses it in Doubles.
    • Slightly increased the length of the period that time is frozen after blocking opponent’s Special Shot in Doubles.
    • Added Shot Button + X Button to powerful shot controls. Press the A Button and X Button at the same time for a topspin powerful shot, press the B Button and X Button at the same time for a slice powerful shot and press the Y Button and X Button for a flat powerful shot.
  • Co-op Challenge Boo Hunt Returns
    • This Co-op Challenge will be available again from the distribution of version 2.2.0 until 09:00 on 1 March 2019. Co-op Challenge is a mode for online play which will only be held for a certain period of time.
      • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Co-op Challenge.
    • Boo Hunt is a Challenge played in Swing Mode where a four-player team is formed among friends or players encountered online to achieve an objective together. (If each player has a controller, up to four players can play on one Nintendo Switch console.)
      • You can acquire three colours of Boo visors by achieving objectives.
    • If there aren’t four total players, the necessary number of COM players will be added after a certain amount of time has passed.
  • Added Hosted Matches
    • Added the Hosted Match mode which allows players to easily compete against each other in Singles matches through LAN Play or Online Play.
    • Besides the two players in the match, an additional player will participate as the host and control match settings as well as which screen to show on the monitor.
    • Three Nintendo Switch consoles are required for a hosted match - one for each of the two players and one for the host.
      • A LAN cable (sold separately) is required for LAN Play.
      • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play an online hosted match. Players must also be registered as friends on the host’s Nintendo Switch console.
    • Access the Hosted Match mode from the main menu by pressing the Right Stick while holding down the L Button and R Button at the same time. The host will select Host and make a room, while the players will select Player and join the room created by the host.
      • A LAN cable (sold separately) is required for LAN Play.
      • All participants must decide the date and time, rules of play, and game progression amongst themselves before the actual match.
    • After all three participants are ready, the host will control various settings and game progress.
    • The host’s screen will be split left and right, showing both P1 and P2 play. (Players’ screens will not be split.) Pressing directional buttons during the match will change the host’s screen: Up Button for split screen, Left Button for P1 screen, and Right Button for P2 screen.
    • The characters that are available to play depend on the respective game progress (save data) on each console.
    • All courts will be available to play regardless of respective game progress on each console.
    • The host controls whether the first to serve will be random, P1, or P2.
    • The host controls whether the character selection screen of each player is visible to the other.
    • The host can select whether the menu can only be controlled by the host, or whether players can control it too.
  • Changes to Character Abilities

      • Slightly increased the power of his shot.
      • Slightly increased his ability to aim for the edges of the sideline.
      • Slightly increased the top speed at which he moves.
      Chain Chomp
      • Slightly increased his ability to aim for the edges of the sideline.
      • Adjusted position in which he’s able to return balls so that there are fewer swings and misses.
      • Decreased length of time between getting in position and leaping during a Leap Shot.
      Spike
      • Slightly increased the top speed at which he moves.
      • Made it a little harder to slip when moving.
      Rosalina
      • Slightly increased the distance she can hit a ball without leaping.

  • Other Changes
    • Online Tournament: Made adjustments to the amount that ratings will increase. Also increased the amount that ratings will increase when points are earned from breaking your opponent’s racket.
    • Made adjustments to visibility of the ball in Bask Ruins, Piranha Plant Forest, Mirage Mansion, Snowfall Mountain, and Savage Sea.
    • Improved AI for COM players.
    • Decreased amount of time that controls are locked while saving the game.
    • Adjusted Koopa Paratroopa’s flying animation.
    • Changed the angle of Rosalina’s hair before she serves when playing left-handed setting.
    • Adjusted height that the ball bounces after hitting a drop shot in The Great Mirror Mystery mission and Adventure mission.
    • Other adjustments have been made to improve gameplay.
    • After you download the latest update, you won’t be able to do Local Play or LAN Play with someone who is using previous update data.

Version 2.1.1

  • Changes to Online Tournament
    • Fixed the issue of not being able to upload latest results to player rankings when certain conditions coincide and few matches have been played in Doubles Class.
      • When your most recent rating is not reflected in December player rankings, if you update to version 2.1.1, play a match in December and upload your data. It will then be reflected in player rankings.
    • Fixed the issue of a doubles team being disbanded even though the player and their partner both choose “Continue Playing” when there’s a communication error with the opposing team under certain conditions in Doubles Class.
      • If there’s a communication error with your doubles partner, then your team will be disbanded.
    • Made it so that, in Doubles Class, a communication error or a match ending due to a player not serving and abandoning the game will result in a 1% rating decrease for the player that caused the error, but ratings for the other three players will remain what they were before the error occurred.
    • Adjusted which courts will be randomly selected. Courts for the first and second rounds of the tournament will be randomly selected from all courts, including the stadium’s night court, and courts for semifinal matches will be randomly selected from the following four stadium courts: Grass Court, Hard Court, Clay Court, Night.
  • Court Adjustments
    • Made adjustments so that tennis balls will not hit the post.
    • Made adjustments so that tennis balls will not hit the chair near the court in Mirage Mansion.
      • Planning to make adjustments to court visibility in future updates.
  • Other Changes
    • Fixed the issue of a black board appearing behind P2 Petey Piranha on the results screen when two lefty Petey Piranhas are playing each other.
    • Fixed the issue of no point being awarded and the match not progressing when a Special Shot is used under certain conditions.

Version 2.1.0

  • Changes to Online Tournament
    • Ability will be classified by four ranks (A, B, C, D), which are based on a player’s rating. Players of similar ranks are now more likely to be matched together.
    • Changed all current five-round tournaments to three rounds. Made it easier to match players of similar ability by increasing number of players with similar progress in the tournament.
    • The condition for being seeded and getting to start from the second round has changed from a player needing to be a tournament champion to a player needing to have a 2,500 or higher rating.
    • Randomly chosen courts in the first and second rounds of the online tournament will be selected from all courts with no hazards, except for the night court. The night court is reserved for the championship match.
      • From version 2.1.0 it will be possible to play a “Hazards OFF” setting with no mast on the Savage Sea court.
    • Changed play time from “two-game, one-set match” to “first to win two games”. If each player wins one game, there will be a tiebreaker. This new play time is also the default setting for Free Play and Swing Mode.
    • Starting in December, player ranking will switch from points-based to ratings-based.
    • When a new month starts, the player’s initial rating will change based on their play results from the previous month. The following changes will occur when December begins.
      • 2,000 or less rating ? Starts at 2,000
      • 2,000 - 2,500 rating ? Current rating will be maintained
      • 2,500 or more rating ? 1/2 of amount over 2,500 will be added to 2,500 instead of 1/10th.

      Note: Player rating will be reset to 2,000 if software was not played in previous month or if there is bad data. If the software is not updated to version 2.1.0, December changes will not be processed.

  • Doubles Class Added to Online Tournament
    • Doubles Class will be newly available in online tournament mode starting in December. Doubles Class will be a four-player doubles match with standard rules, including use of energy.
    • Doubles teams can be formed with two people sharing a Nintendo Switch console, with a friend online, or by matching with a stranger online of similar ability.
    • Pair Rank will be determined by calculating the average rating of the two players’ respective ratings.
    • Doubles Class is compatible with the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app for voice chat. However, in the Doubles Class online tournament, voice chat is only possible between doubles partners and is not possible with the opponent, regardless of whether it’s in the menus or during the match.
  • New Games Added
    • The second Co-op Challenge, Yoshi’s Ring Shot, will begin. Co-op Challenge is a mode for online play which will only be held for a certain period of time.
      • A membership to Nintendo Switch Online is required to play Co-op Challenge.
    • Co-op Challenge: Yoshi’s Ring Shot will be available from the distribution of version 2.1.0 on 1 December until 09:00 on 10 January 2019. Yoshi’s Ring Shot is a Challenge played with button controls (standard rules) with a four-player team. The team is formed among online players or with friends. (If each player has a controller, up to four players can play on one Nintendo Switch console.) You can acquire Yoshis of different colours (blue, red, and yellow) by meeting objectives.
      • A Yoshi of a different colour can only be obtained by the player who achieved the objective.
    • Boo Hunter, which is played with one Nintendo Switch console, has been added to Swing Mode. This game can be played in Co-op mode or Competitive mode. Up to four players (including a COM player) can play.
  • Changes to the Shot System
    • “Taunting” is no longer possible while a player’s character is moving.
    • Made it possible to change shots with the A, B or Y Buttons if the Left Stick is tilted up or down while charging a lob or drop shot by pressing the X Button.
    • Made it more likely for a ball to be returned to the back of the court when returning a serve with a drop shot.
    • Made it easier to see how much energy changed in the Energy Gauge.
    • Changed the vibration of the controller when pressing the button twice and charging a powerful shot in comparison to the vibration of the controller after pressing the button once.
  • Changes to Character Abilities
    • We changed the abilities of certain characters.

  • Additional Settings
    • Savage Sea: You can now play with no mast in the middle of the court by selecting “Hazards OFF”. When the Savage Sea court is randomly selected in the online tournament mode, there will be no mast.
    • Free Play: ”Tournament” was added to Play Time. The first to win two games is the winner, but a tiebreaker will take place if each wins one game, unlike Extended Play.
  • Other Changes
    • Co-op Challenge: When you Join a Friend, a ? will appear next to a Favorite.
    • Free Play: Fixed problem of Simple ball speed decreasing.
    • COM Tournament: The issue of the game sometimes stopping on the COM tournament menu when saving interrupted data with specific progress created in version 1.2.0 or earlier has been fixed.
    • Other adjustments have been made to improve gameplay.

Version 2.0.1

  • Changes to Shot System
    • Slice shot’s power has been slightly decreased.
    • Returning a slice which was hit at a high point close to the net has been made easier.
    • The power of lobs has been increased when playing with Simple rules.
  • Changes to Character Abilities
    • The abilities of certain characters have been changed.

      Wario Slightly increased the distance he can hit a ball without leaping.
      Rosalina Slightly increased her movement speed during a Charge Shot.

    • Simple Class: In Online Tournament, option settings that do not affect Simple rules will not be displayed.
    • Free Play and Swing Mode: When three or more players are playing Singles, the game will now start with P1 and P2 serving for matches other than Team matches. The server and returner will be randomly selected.
    • Online Tournament: Control issues when your character is on the far court have been fixed.
    • Adventure: The issue of software shutting down when playing in Challenges has been fixed.
    • The issue of Zone Shots being cancelled has been fixed.
    • The issue concerning Leap Shots and swinging and missing when Koopa Troopa is on a star point has been fixed.
