3D Secure – Issues with the online payment authentication

The information in this article can help you if you are not able to complete a purchase on Nintendo eShop due to an issue with the new additional authentication screen added to the checkout process of a transaction.

    Note:

A message appears on your Nintendo Switch console informing you that your credit card cannot be used, and recommending using another to make the payment or that the transaction should be completed using a PC or smart device.

    What to Do:

    1. This new additional layer of security to online card payments is not yet supported by all credit cards.
    2. Along with the notification that displays when this issue occurs (informing that it is not possible to complete the transaction), a QR Code is shown that will guide you to the relevant webpage of Nintendo, where the payment can be made.
    3. After the transaction on the webpage is complete, the purchase is available for your Nintendo Account and can be accessed on your console.
      • Note: It may be necessary to close and reopen Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch console.
    4. Note: When adding funds, please make sure you are signed in to the Nintendo Account that you are intending to add the funds for. In particular, if you have one or more supervised accounts (such as a child account), please make sure you are using the correct account.

    Situation Not Resolved:

    • If you still encounter issues when paying with a credit card, this may be due to the new European payment regulations. Please contact your card-issuing bank for initial support.
    • It is also possible to add funds to your Nintendo eShop account from any smartphone, tablet or PC by accessing https://ec.nintendo.com/my or by using Nintendo eShop Cards. You may also choose an alternative payment method, such as PayPal.
