Game Boy Advance SP
The Game Boy Advance SP is a 32-bit power pack for the pocket (just 84.6mm long, 82mm wide and 24.3 mm thick). The letters SP stand for Special Project. The name promises an impressive range of innovations - and it delivers them. The Game Boy Advance SP features a flip-top screen measuring 40.8 x 61.2mm (exactly the same size as the Game Boy Advance) with a resolution of 240x160 pixels, over 32,000 displayable colours, an integral screen light and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery as used in mobile telephones. This battery provides over 10 hours of perfectly-lit video gaming without interruption. By switching off the screen light, playing time is extended to about 18 hours. The power supply provided allows the Game Boy Advance SP to operate from mains electricity, including while recharging the battery. When the unit is switched off, battery recharge time is about 3 hours.
The console, weighing around 143g, has been made available in the following editions:
- Flame Red
- Arctic Blue
- Tribal Edition
- Classic NES Edition
- Pink Edition
- Zelda Limited Edition
- Mario Limited Edition
- Kingdom Hearts Edition
Naturally, the Game Boy Advance SP has the same powerful features that have made the Game Boy Advance so successful (e.g. the multiplayer mode that allows up to four people to play together via the Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable Set, which is available separately).
All Game Boy Advance titles and practically all Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles can also be played on the new system. There is no special new Game Boy Advance SP software.
But that is far from the whole story. Together with the Nintendo GameCube, which can be connected to the Game Boy Advance SP via the Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance cable, you can play games that, for example, allow data to be exchanged between the two systems.
The power supply is included when you purchase the Game Boy Advance SP. It is however designed solely for use with the Game Boy Advance SP and is not compatible with other Game Boy models. The power supply allows the Game Boy Advance SP to operate from mains electricity, including while recharging the battery. When the unit is switched off, battery recharge time is about 3 hours.
