  • Gaming for the first time and unexpected co-operation – Player’s Voice Inbox June 2018

    19/06/2018

At the start of every month we like to share the most entertaining, enlightening and inspiring fan messages that land in the UK Player’s Voice inbox. From broad explanations about entire games, to laser focused examples of exemplary moments, we love finding out what the Nintendo gamers of the UK are enjoying on their Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS family systems, and then sharing them with the world! To learn more about how to contact us, and what you can win, please read the Player's Voice competition article. Please note that the views, thoughts and opinions expressed in these letters are not necessarily shared by Nintendo.

Now that you know what’s going on, here are the top letters we received throughout May 2018:

Kirby Star Allies by Harry Fielding

“It’s really hard for me to socialise with my autistic brother. But when we began playing Kirby Star Allies, it was like he was a completely different person. He was actually strategically thinking, talking to me and planning what to do in the Soul Melter mode of The Ultimate Choice! This game has changed him, for the better. Thank you, Nintendo."

Gaming for the first time with Snipperclips – Cut it out, together! by Ray Stokes

“My fiancé Millie and I have been playing Snipperclips; she bought it for my birthday as I had dropped many not-so-subtle hints that I thought it would be a great laugh for the next game we could play together. She’s not much of a gamer herself, though does enjoy a quiet night in curled up with a good game.

We had her mum in town for the weekend, we ate good food, danced to live bands and put the world to rights, but the best moments came when Millie suggested that she played not with me but with her mum who, of her own accord, had never played a videogame before, Millie had the perfect game to be her first.

I dropped the switch into the dock, gave the ladies their Joy-Con, sat back and watched the most enjoyable gaming experience of my life. Millie, remembering the puzzles from the first time we played, imparted some knowledge to her mum as the puzzles demanded.

Fun learning turned to quiet contemplation undercut by jaunty instruments playing in the background. Here I saw two things: firstly, my other half and soon-to-be wife sharing something I’ve always loved with one of the most important people in her life and secondly, I witnessed someone discover the joy and excitement of a video game, for the very first time.

Satoru Iwata famously said, “above all, games are meant to just be one thing: fun for everyone” I got to see first-hand what he meant.”

Splatoon 2 mania by Angus McGhie

“Undoubtedly the craziest and best game I have played on the Nintendo Switch so far is Splatoon 2. With a massively diverse range of game modes, weapons, outfits and different ways to play, Splatoon 2 not only completely reworks the shooter genre but also offers a truly captivating experience to anyone lucky enough to get their hands on a copy of this game.

'Splatting’ the opposition team becomes very much an extra objective in most of the games, which all contain their own tight contests for inking supremacy. The colourful and vibrant battles in multiplayer and the exciting campaign with stupendous boss battles make for some great gaming both docked and on the go. The controls are easy to pick up but hard to master and you will quickly find yourself spending many a happy hour in this game.

Splatoon 2 offers a positively unique experience and you are greatly missing out if you don't play this game!”

The joy of Super Mario Odyssey by Jack Smith

“I've wanted to play Super Mario Odyssey ever since it was announced, and finally getting my hands on it makes me feel like a kid again. The first time I played Super Mario 64 was over a decade ago and, being 20 now, it instils the same thrills and joy I felt all those years ago.

Super Mario 64 was probably the first game that felt infinitely explorable to me. There was always a secret path, or a secret technique to make the time playing more amazing. With Super Mario Odyssey, I love coming home from university and looking forward to all the new things I can discover, all the unique characters I can meet, all the lovingly-crafted worlds there are to explore in this game, and I really appreciate Nintendo for making it.”
