In a world where war is merely a game staged by rich corporations to avoid “real” military conflict, you assume the role of a top fighter pilot recently transferred to a new base. From this starting point you’ll soon take to the skies, unfolding details as you go on the mysterious recruits who will be flying alongside you – all of whom appear to be mere children.

As much as events on the ground will get you thinking, it is in the air that the true drama unfolds. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk take you to the heart of the airborne action, with movements of the Nunchuk steering your plane while the Wii Remote is tipped forward and back to dictate the speed at which you fly. Mastering this control method adds even more intensity to events as you chase enemy aircraft or deftly avoid incoming fire. If you prefer a more conventional approach, however, you can also opt to use the Classic Controller (Pro) or Nintendo GameCube Controller. 

In the heat of battle, you’ll be able to perform skilful manoeuvres by filling a gauge that appears on-screen when you are in hot pursuit of an enemy. By getting within a certain range, the gauge will start to fill, leaving you the tap of a button away from performing a gravity defying feat that leaves you in prime position to take your target out. The fuller your manoeuvre gauge is, the more effective the move you execute will prove as you attempt to clear the skies of rival pilots.

Each mission you undertake will be introduced with a military-style briefing, giving you an overview of the task at hand. Then you’ll have to select the plane and weapons you consider most suitable for the job, selecting from a range which will grow as you progress. Do you need an aircraft that is built for air to ground combat, or one that offers the best in mobility and speed? Choose carefully, because the enemy will show no mercy.

Thankfully, if you’re finding things too hot to handle on your own, the game’s two player mode enables a friend to help you out by grabbing a second Wii Remote and taking aim at enemies as well – a comforting prospect as your campaign builds to an intense finale.
