Rock Band 2

System: Wii Release date: 09/10/2009

Those after a quiet and restrained recital of some plinky plonky chamber music - please don’t let the door hit your derriere on your way out. Still here? Then you’re ready for some riffage! Stand up and be counted if you are itching to make some heaven sent guitar grinding, drum thumping, bass pumping noise: Rock Band 2 has come to Wii. Play on your own or with up to three friends as drummer, bassist, guitarist or singer as a self-made super group.

The disc comes packed with 84 awesome tracks from legends like AC/DC, Judas Priest and The Grateful Dead, underground icons such as Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Bikini Kill and hungry young upstarts like Paramore, Silversun Pickups and Interpol. It’s all rock all the time and if your thirst isn’t quenched by the disc tracks there are 20 free tracks to download and hundreds more available online in the Rock Band music store.

Beloved by millions worldwide, Rock Band 2 continues the Harmonix revolution in rhythm action games: pressing the coloured buttons on the controller in time with the rhythm of coloured marks hitting a target on screen is easy as cherry pie to pick up but extremely challenging to master. Each player in your band can choose their own difficulty level so relative newcomers can join the band without getting ‘caught in a mosh’ when the veterans’ fretboards are on fire. Several difficulty levels mean there’s always something harder and more intricate if you feel you’re up to the task - but don’t think for a second you can swagger on trash talking that you’re the bomb if you can’t back it up. Missing notes or wailing like an off key banshee will soon see you ‘drop out’ of a song and you’ll stay out unless skilled band mates who have built up their Overdrive bonus choose to bring you back with a shot of pure rock. So do try to stay on your band mates’ good sides and play nicely with the other children. Alternatively, if you just wanna jam without pressure from the man (or the worry of anyone dropping out) you can kick back with new No Fail Mode.

In World Tour Mode you and your friends can hit the road visiting 59 venues in 24 cities, working up from dingy dives to sold out stadiums, earning the adoration of fans and making money doing what you love. Money that can be spent hiring roadies and customising your avatars in the Rock Shop so you project a suitably rocking image.

If getting your band together in one place isn’t possible you can gig online! If you want to take on the world (and who doesn’t?) you can challenge other bands over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in the Battle of the Bands: daily and weekly tournament playlists put together by the Harmonix team.

Depending on your role in the band, you should be readying your rock growl (but secretly doing some scales and arpegggios) limbering up your fingers for furious fretwork or practicing drum stick spins - because looking cool doesn’t hurt when you’re the one at the back. There shall be a rockening…

  • If your drum skills are going to stop the show make sure it’s from your fans gasping in awe, not because you need practice. Rock Band 2 features a new Drum Trainer Mode so you can reach peak performance in no time.
  • Download hundreds of tracks (which fully integrate into every play mode) from the Rock Band online store.
  • Play online over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection with friends or against other bands in gruelling tournaments.
  • When the pressure of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle gets too much you can always switch to No Fail Mode. Doesn’t matter how many bum notes you play, the fans will still love you.
  • All Rock Band and The Beatles: Rock Band instruments and microphones are fully compatible as are most Guitar Hero and authorised third party controllers for Wii. When in doubt please ask your retailer if your peripheral of choice is supported.
