There and Back Again

Captain Olimar has just returned home, and is pleased to be in one piece. After crash-landing on an alien planet, he quickly learned that the only way to escape was to utilise the talents of the Pikmin: the cutest little creatures that under his command sought out the scattered components of his beloved spacecraft. With only 30 days to complete the mission before his emergency oxygen supplies ran out, Olimar will never forget the Pikmin who aided him in his hour of need.

But home isn’t always as sweet as it should be, and it turns out Olimar’s intergalactic employer, Hocotate Freight, has fallen deep into debt in his absence. As the firm’s President regales the whole sorry tale to Olimar, the weary explorer inadvertently drops a trinket obtained on his travels. When this meagre scrap of metal is valued at a whopping 100 Pokos, the solution to Hocotate Freight’s problems becomes instantly clear.

Olimar will simply have to return to the dangerous planet and take charge of the Pikmin once more. After all, if things just lying around back there are worth 100 Pokos, raising the cash necessary to repay the loan without a restrictive 30-day time limit should be simple. Right?

Two’s Company

This time around, Olimar won’t be making his voyage alone - his colleague Louie will be coming along for the ride too. And after the dangers encountered on his last journey, Olimar is sure to be glad of an extra pair of hands to help command Pikmin and tackle the curious collection of hostile inhabitants that lie in wait.

2-Player Battle

Pikmin might be super-cute, but in 2-Player Battle mode there’s a good chance things could turn ugly. After working in isolation to master the art of controlling Pikmin in the game’s central mission, the thrill of pitting your wits against a friend injects an entirely new kind of satisfaction to issuing orders to your diminutive sidekicks.

Facing off against a friend in split-screen combat, you’ll have to guide either Olimar or Louie and a company of Pikmin as you search the Battle Arena for four yellow marbles and try to return them safely to your Onion.

Alternatively, you could attempt a raid on enemy territory and capture a single - more valuable - marble from your opponent to take back to your base. Either way, you’ll have to carefully balance your desire for a sizeable army with a need for speed as you work to secure victory and settle any arguments over who is the true master strategist when it comes to coordinating the Pikmin under your power.

Upping the stakes further is the fact you can order your Pikmin to set about your opposing commander, or collect cherries and take them back to your base to activate one of twelve bonuses that assist your team in battle. You can also set certain handicaps at the outset of the contest to level the playing field. Bring out the competitive side in Olimar, Louie and the Pikmin, and do everything in your power to make sure you don’t lose your marbles (or pride) in 2-Player Battle.

2-Player Challenge

As with the one-player version of Challenge Mode, the aim of the game is to find a key that will ultimately offer you a way out of the Challenge Arena. However, unlike 2-Player Battle, you’ll be working together instead of in opposition.

Don’t expect an easy ride though! Even with two players scouring the Challenge Arenas, you’ll have your work cut out to overcome the obstacles in your path.

2-Player Challenge

To distinguish between your achievements in 1-Player and 2-Player Challenge Mode, your high scores will be recorded separately.

Pint-sized Partners

In NEW PLAY CONTROL! Pikmin 2, Olimar doesn’t have to bear the burden of saving Hocotate Freight alone. Joining him this time around is fellow employee, Louie, who certainly hasn’t flown halfway across space just to make up the numbers.

pm2_content_scr_pint_size.jpg

Like Olimar, Louie can take full control of the planet’s Pikmin, and the option of switching between the two diminutive commanders whenever you like opens up a whole range of new strategic opportunities.

Both characters can independently lead squads of Pikmin off in different directions to perform separate tasks. A quick press of the – Button on the Wii Remote lets you jump back and forth between the pair, enabling you to take care of business much more quickly and effectively.

With so much precious treasure to find and danger around every corner, it might be pushing it to say many hands make light work. But being able to use the combined leadership skills of both Olimar and Louie as they direct the planet’s Pikmin certainly spreads the workload.

A Colourful Crew

Red Pikmin:

Your fire-resistant friends. You can count on Red Pikmin when the heat is on.

Blue Pikmin:

Just as at home in water as they are on land, Blue Pikmin aren’t afraid to get their feet wet.

Yellow Pikmin:

Yellow Pikmin sport bigger ears than the rest of the bunch – helping them glide a little further when thrown by Olimar or Louie.

Purple Pikmin:

Boasting the strength of 10 normal Pikmin, the discovery of Purple Pikmin adds some heavyweight clout to Olimar and Louie’s assembly of helpers. Just throwing them makes a big impact, with the resultant shockwaves being severe enough to leave enemies somewhat shaken.

White Pikmin:

The smallest members of the Pikmin family. But don’t be deceived by their size – White Pikmin are both poisonous and immune to poison. Add in their ability to locate items buried underground, and you have a tiny ally with enormous potential.

Underground Exploration

Deep under the surface of the planet there’s a whole new world for Olimar and Louie to explore. As you busy yourself with collecting precious artefacts from day to day, you’ll stumble across holes in the ground that act as gateways to fascinating new cave areas fraught with challenges.

Before you head underground to explore the multi-floored caves, you’ll see an overview of what lies in wait. Depending on the hazards in store, you’ll want to organise your Pikmin exploration team accordingly.

Whatever shape your crew takes, you’ll have to hope they’re up to the task. Because once you’re in the cave, you’ll be without access to the Pikmin-generating Onions you’re used to utilising from the surface...

Although it might sound risky, the risk is worth the reward. Caves are often rich in treasure, Candypop flowers required to create Purple and White Pikmin and dark-dwelling bosses that yield special items Olimar and Louie can use to expand their repertoire of skills.

Challenge Mode

pm2_content_scr_challenge_mode.jpg

Playing in one of 30 Challenge Arenas, your job is to locate a key and return to your research pod in order to secure safe passage out of the level. Each arena comes with restrictions – like the number of Pikmin you’ll be granted, or the fact that every challenge is a race against time. And the enemies lying in wait don’t make things much easier either.

A perfect performance that sees you returning to your spaceship with all of your Pikmin intact will be rewarded with a high score and a pink flower to mark your achievement in the Challenge Mode menu.

Piklopedia

The ever-changing surroundings of the alien planet Olimar and Louie find themselves on never ceases to amaze. Bizarre plant and animal life lurks around every corner, with each variant landscape ushering in the promise of an eye-popping new discovery.

pm2_content_scr_piklopedia.jpg

For information-hungry explorers like Olimar and Louie, the chance to keep track of all the outlandish things they see is too good to miss. To this end, Olimar records details of every remarkable plant encountered and every terrifying enemy defeated in a log known as the Piklopedia.

A quick glance at this tome of information not only reveals facts on how many times the adventurers have overcome a certain type of enemy, or how many Pikmin have been lost in the line of duty when facing it. It also offers an opportunity to once again look upon the truly incredible discoveries that they make with each new day, and the ability to interact with and study recorded enemies from a safe distance by throwing carrots in their direction.
