Gameplay

Manipulate pipes, blocks and the like using the Wii U GamePad touch screen to guide Mini Mario and pals to the exit of each level, all while dodging Spikes, and before time runs out! The simplest levels have two characters and door, while others see Mushroom Kingdom friends like Mini Luigi and Mini Peach joining the puzzling fun. In these stages, as soon as your first character reaches the door, you only have six seconds to get the next one through – and the next! – before the door locks! Even more challenging are multi-door levels, where each toy has to be directed to its own unique exit! Once the Mario toys start moving, they won’t stop, so you’ll need your wits about you if you’re to stay ahead in this puzzle-tastic game.

After you set Mini Mario and his mates in motion, you’ll need to tap or drag elements to create a path to the exit. Extend or retract Girders to make stairs and bridges, or place Conveyors to change characters’ directions, for example. Each set of stages introduces a new element, but you’ll only have a limited number of each to use: in order to bridge one gap, for instance, you might need to remove one you’ve previously placed. Planning and timing are critical, and there are even fixed elements to take account of, such as ladders.

Coins, points and stars

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars is more than just about escaping DK’s clutches, though, as each stage contains various goodies: Coins and Large Coins are worth 100 and 1,000 points respectively, while a one-off M Coin weighs in at a hefty 2,000 points. Grab every last one, and you’ll be awarded a whopping 6,000 points! Each completed stage nets you a bronze, silver or gold trophy, based on your accumulated points, which equates to one, two or three stars. Earn enough gold trophies by beating dozens of levels, and you’ll gain access to the Bonus Levels mode, where further super-crafty challenges await!

Workshop & Community

Securing a safe exit for Mini Mario is only half the story with Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars: why not plan, build and hone your very own levels, then share online them with other players? Don’t stop there – download other players’ creations and see if you can beat them, and even share your original levels with nearby players via StreetPass!

Men at work

As you progress through the main game, each stage introduces a new element, such as the Long Springs from Jumpy Jungle, or the Blue Lifts from Dashing Desert. In the Workshop Store, you’ll be able to unlock these elements with stars earned in the main game. The more stages you clear, the more elements will be available, including characters and backgrounds.

You can craft and store up to 50 levels, either using one of three templates, or from scratch, if you’re a design superstar! Either way, when your layout is just so, you’ll need to play test it to ensure you can collect all Coins, including the M Coin, and reach all exits in time. Complete a successful play test, and you’ve got yourself a custom level that’s ready to share with the community!

Give a little, get a little

If you choose to enable sharing for your levels, you can use the in-game community to upload your levels so other players can download and enjoy trying to solve them. Similarly, you can download other players’ levels, too, no matter whether they were created on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family systems, and leave them a ‘Yeah!’ if you like their efforts. Discover an exceptional level, and you can even tip the creator some of your stars to reward them. They can then spend those stars in the Workshop Store to buy new elements, and create more great puzzles!

Additionally, you can view other players’ levels, comments and ‘Yeah!’s in Miiverse, too, but you’ll need to visit the in-game community to upload or download levels, or tip stars to other creators.
