New Pokémon to discover, catch and train!

Many different species of Pokémon call the Galar region home. Much is unknown about the biology of these Pokémon, so researchers are working diligently to discover more information. Here are just some of the new Pokémon you’ll encounter.

There are several differences between Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, such as the species of Pokémon that appear and different Gym Leaders to challenge.

Galarian forms!

Certain Pokémon have adapted to the unique environment of one specific region and look different than the same species might look when found in another region.

These different appearances are known as the regional forms of those Pokémon, and it seems their behaviour also differs from that of their previously discovered forms. The Galar region has its own regional forms of Pokémon, known as Galarian forms!

The Legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta are shrouded in mystery and are unknown even to those who live in the Galar region.

attacks so gracefully that its movements can even captivate its opponents. It holds what appears to be a sword in its mouth.

Zamazenta’s

regal and majestic movements overwhelm any opponents that dare face it. Its body is covered in what seems to be a shield.

Friendly – and not so friendly – faces

As a resident of the Galar region, you’ll embark on an adventure to become the Champion and meet many people along the way

character_leon.png

Leon

Leon is the current Champion of the Galar region and has never been defeated in an official Pokémon battle. His personality, together with his peerless skill, has made him extremely popular. He truly deserves the title of “the greatest Trainer in all of Galar”.

character_hop.png

Hop

Hop is Leon’s younger brother and will become one of your rivals. He and you are neighbours, and you’ll begin your journeys on the same day. He aims to become Champion, just like his older brother did.

character_professor_magnolia.png

Professor Magnolia

Professor Magnolia is the pre-eminent Pokémon Professor of the Galar region. Her main focus of research has been the Dynamax phenomenon. She shares her home with Sonia and has given her a certain research task...

Bede

Bede is one of your rivals who is skilled at Pokémon battles and has the pride to match! While he clearly is aiming to become Champion, he seems to have other objectives as well...

character_marnie.png

Marnie

Marnie is one of your rivals who has a competitive side. Together with her partner Morpeko, she aims to become the Champion of the Galar region in order to accomplish a certain goal.

character_team_yell.png

Team Yell

Team Yell is a group of troublemakers who seem to appear wherever the Gym Challenge takes you and who attempt to get in your way at every opportunity.

Style your profile!

Put on your favourite clothes, get a new hairdo, and set out on your adventure in style! On your travels, you’ll come across boutiques and hair salons where you can buy new clothes or change your hairstyle to freshen things up.

There are plenty of different clothing items, hairstyles, and even make-up options, so try out different combinations and show the entire Galar region your favourite look!

The Dynamax phenomenon

Dynamax is a phenomenon unique to specific locations in the Galar region, where Pokémon can take on gigantic appearances during battle, and it’s an integral part of Pokémon battles in the region.

CI_NSwitch_PokemonSwordShield_Dynamaxing_01_EN.jpg
CI_NSwitch_PokemonSwordShield_Dynamaxing_02.jpg
CI_NSwitch_PokemonSwordShield_Dynamaxing_03.jpg

Pokémon from the Galar region are able to Dynamax, and when they do, they become tremendously strong and receive a boost to their power. All the moves of a Dynamax Pokémon will turn into special Max Moves. Max Moves pack a punch, but that’s not all! Some of them can even trigger powerful additional effects!

Gigantamaxing changes the game!

While Dynamaxing seems to be a phenomenon common to the Pokémon from Galar, it’s been discovered that there’s a special phenomenon known as Gigantamaxing, too! Only certain species of Pokémon can Gigantamax – and even among such species, only rare specimens will be able to Gigantamax.

features_modes_gigantamaxing_screen1.jpg
features_modes_gigantamaxing_screen2.jpg
features_modes_gigantamaxing_screen3.jpg

Gigantamax Pokémon become bigger, and just like normal Dynamaxing, Gigantamaxing boosts the power of the Pokémon. It also allows each Gigantamax Pokémon to use a unique move known as a G-Max Move! Each G-Max Move is particular to a specific species of Gigantamax Pokémon, and regular Dynamax Pokémon can’t use G-Max Moves at all!

Explore the Wild Area

CI_NSwitch_PokemonSwordShield_WildAreas_02.jpg
CI_NSwitch_PokemonSwordShield_WildAreas_03.jpg
CI_NSwitch_PokemonSwordShield_WildAreas_04.jpg

The Wild Area is a vast expanse of land in the Galar region with untamed wilderness. It is full of nature and connects several different towns and cities. You’ll find a greater variety of Pokémon living in the Wild Area than anywhere else in the Galar region, and you can even connect with other players here online* or via local wireless**! There are lots of different ways to do so, including:

Joining a Max Raid Battle

SQ_NSwitch_PokemonSwordShield_MaxRaidBattles.jpg

Max Raid Battles are a new battle format that takes place in the Wild Area, in which you’ll team up with up to three other players online or via local wireless to take on a wild Dynamax Pokémon. Players will then get a chance to catch the wild Dynamax Pokémon if they manage to defeat it – but it won’t go down easily.

Camping with your Pokémon

Enjoy a Pokémon Camp almost anywhere anytime you’re exploring in the Galar region! If you ever feel like spending some time with the Pokémon in your party or cooking up a nice meal with them, then there’s no need to hesitate – in many cases, you can just set up camp right then and there!

features_modes_camping.jpg

When camping with up to three other players, you can let your Pokémon play with their Pokémon, or cook up a big pot of curry and enjoy it together!

The Battle Stadium

In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, you can connect to the internet and battle against players from all over the world in the Battle Stadium. Features like Rental Teams and Online Competitions also allow for different ways to connect to other players.
