When a movie reaches blockbuster status, it develops a core of fans who are clamouring to see more of their favourite film. So the creators go back to the archives and often re-release the film featuring never-before-seen footage. Such movies are called director's cuts. Now it's the turn of video games to take the director's cut route.

Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut is - as the name suggests - a special edition of the best-selling Sega title, now spruced up with smarter graphics and pumped full of Nintendo GameCube-exclusive features. Dr Eggman (or Dr Robotnik, to give him his more usual moniker in the West) is up to his old 'world domination' tricks. He's dreamed up a scheme to steal the seven Chaos Emeralds and use them to summon a giant Chaos creature to do his evil bidding. Sonic can't handle all this by himself, so he enlists the help of his friends Tails, Amy, Knuckles and Big the Cat to crack Eggman's dastardly plot.

Apart from the improved graphics, the main game stays the same. Choose from Sonic or one of his buddies (you'll have to complete certain tasks to unlock them all) and enter each 3D platform-filled level to pick up rings and rescue cute furry animals. But in-between each frantic platform-style level is a more relaxed 3D hub world, and this is where the 'Adventure' part comes into the game. Here you are free to explore, solve puzzles, and talk to other characters to gain vital information.

There are 30 massive levels to tackle, broken up by typically over-the-top boss battles. Plus, you can collect and raise cute little virtual pets called Chaos. Chaos can be kept in a special garden, fed with items to activate secret new features, and unlock special mini-games. All of these features were available in the original Sonic Adventure - but Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut includes a whole lot more. In addition to enhanced graphics, there are more than five hours of new gameplay elements to discover. Plus, a new Mission Mode features 60 mini-missions in which you're challenged to find exclusive items and unlock some special surprises - including 12 hidden classic Sega Game Gear titles.

Last - and coolest of all - you can connect your copy of Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut to the Game Boy Advance versions of Sonic Pinball Party, Sonic Advance and Sonic Advance 2, and transfer your Chaos from one game to another. Like any good movie, Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut will keep you coming back for more, over and over again.
