Big news! The latest Nintendo Direct revealed that Splatoon 2 arrives on Nintendo Switch on July 21st! And that’s not all! We also got a look at a brand new mode called Salmon Run, as well as some fresh new amiibo.

In Salmon Run you and three other Inklings will take on the role of Freelance Power Egg collectors. Your mission? To work together with the other freelancers to defeat creatures of the Salmonid genus and collect the treasured Power Eggs they leave behind. You’re even provided with special gear and weaponry to complete your task! Sound easy? Well, it’s not just one wave coming at you, it’s a horde!

Communication and cooperation will be absolutely key in defeating the Salmonid, especially the Boss Salmonid that Inklings are paid a bounty to hunt. Need a life saver? Incapacitated Inklings can be resuscitated if they’re inked by an ally.

Some foes will even drop rare Golden Eggs that Inklings can harvest by transporting them to the containment unit in the centre of the site. Is this the freelancer’s ultimate objective? To harvest Golden Eggs and haul them to Inkopolis? The rewards for such a perilous mission must be worth the effort!

More research will be required on Salmon Run so look out for further updates soon!

Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed that three new Splatoon amiibo (sold separately) – Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy and Inkling Squid – will arrive alongside Splatoon 2 on July 21st. Check ‘em out!

You can tap a compatible Splatoon amiibo to make the figure character appear in-game. Befriend your amiibo character and it can remember your current gear, player settings and camera options. We bet that’d be pretty handy when waging Turf Wars at a friend’s house, or as a convenient way to have a pre-set loadout ready to go!

Inklings are a social species so it should come as no surprise that you can snap all kinds of photos with your amiibo friend to share on social media via the Nintendo Switch Album. Your amiibo friend might even give you some special gear as a gift.

We’ve also discovered that Splatoon 2 is compatible with previously released Splatoon amiibo (sold separately) as well.

Lots of new info and lots of excitement here at the Squid Research Lab! You can find out more about Splatoon 2 at our official Splatoon 2 gamepage, and get more updates at the official Splatoon Facebook page, where we publish our findings.
