WiiWare Highlights: Classics Reinvented

WiiWare Highlights: Classics Reinvented

WiiWare offers you the chance to download exciting new games straight to Wii in minutes. These titles are created by both well-known publishers and fresh, new talent who now have a platform to show the world their creativity! With the recent announcement of a new storage solution for Wii, the sky’s the limit when it comes to downloading new games to play and we’ve taken a close look at some of the stars on the horizon.

This week we’re checking out some new games that may remind you of those golden days of gaming back when Top Gun was top of the movie charts and electronica was popular the first time round…

A Modern-Day Caveman

Tyrone Rodriguez of developer Nicalis is clearly a lover of classic platformers and when he came across Cave Story, he quickly got in touch with renowned designer Daisuke Amaya - or Pixel to his fans – to convince him that the game should be made widely available.

The platformer puts you in the role of a little guy who’s out to help save the cute Mimigas population from an evil scientist. Sure to appeal to old and new fans alike, Tyrone explains how WiiWare is the perfect platform for this type of game: “Nintendo’s done a really great job of opening its arms and embracing smaller developers, independent developers, as well as larger publishers, and giving them a medium to create new games that are exclusive to Wii and give Wii owners the opportunity to buy games instantly without having to wait for the store to open at nine in the morning”.

Blockbusters with bite

Squibs Arcade takes contemporary AAA games and recreates them in a format reminiscent of old LCD games like the Nintendo Game & Watch series, but with a special twist…

Paul Andrews, founder of Alten8 Media explains, “We thought, let’s look at some current AAA titles and take the key elements of those titles and see if we can break them down…hopefully people will see the jokes, but also that they’re fun to play as well”. We’re Fat or Call of Honour anyone?

Pinball Wizard

In Spaceball Revolution, the object of the game is simple: fire a ball at a grid to recreate a pattern.

However, the various obstacles and futuristic graphics of this arcade-style game really pep up the experience. Graeme Williams, producer at Virtual Toys, says the core game concept was clear from early on: “We absolutely wanted to start with an arcade idea, but make it very contemporary for the WiiWare market.” SpaceBall Revolution is, like all classic games, deceptively simple, “Very simple, easy to learn, but [it takes] a lifetime to master, as they say”.
