Review: Star Fox Command
Fox McCloud and his elite team of cosmic adventurers are back in the
latest in the much-loved Star Fox series, exclusive to Nintendo DS. With
gripping solo missions and multiplayer options that allow up to six
people to play with a single game card, this has all the makings of an
inter-stellar classic. Get back in the trusty Arwing fighter and prepare
for blast-off!
All the thrilling action and gorgeous 3D graphics you have come to
expect of the Star Fox series are present and correct, but this time the
game has been tailored perfectly to the unique format of the DS. The
stylus controls are intuitive and fluid: adjust direction and speed with
a simple stroke, and even perform spectacular barrel rolls to deflect
enemy lasers.
Making full use of the DS dual screen format, the stylish, razor-sharp
graphics almost jump out of the upper screen as you dog-fight over
planet surfaces, cityscapes and oceans. At the same time, the touch
screen is used for flight controls and doubles as a radar you can use to
track enemies and plan the best course of attack. Identify targets, get
your bombs ready then let them rip!
The high-octane action will get your adrenalin flowing, but Star Fox
Command is no mindless shooter. An absorbing strategy element engages
the grey matter and places Star Fox Command in a different class to the
competition. Bring out your inner general as you study the layout of the
landscape, analyse the enemy's strengths and weaknesses and select the
best method of attack. Take over enemy bases and advance across the map
by controlling a maximum of four fighters to execute attacks using a
turn-based system.
This game has a huge amount to offer the solo player. The main story
mode will keep you absorbed with an exciting, non-linear plot that
unfolds differently depending on the choices you make. There are more
than 10 characters and ships for you to control, which can be unlocked
by completing the game. With a total of 33 levels to play and nine
different endings, this is one you'll keep coming back to.
There are also a range of fantastic multiplayer options. Single Card
Download Play allows you and up to five friends to challenge each other
to real-time dogfights to see who rules the skies. Free online play
means that if you're brave enough, you can take on up to three pilots
from anywhere in the world using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The game is
full of surprises and great touches: you can even record your own voice
to use as the garbled language spoken by the main characters.
With thrilling action and involving missions, Star Fox Command is one
you definitely won't want to miss. The old Star Fox feel is intact but
has been enhanced by using the full potential of the DS. Get ready for
battle as Fox, Falco, Slippy and all your flying favourites prepare for
take-off!
Star Fox Command is in shops from January 26, only on Nintendo DS.
