What is UNO?

UNO is a classic card game for everyone! No matter your age or experience with card games, you’ll pick up the rules in a flash. Then it’s every man for himself – UNO is an easy game to play, but not such an easy game to win!

With UNO on WiiWare and Nintendo DSiWare, there are all sorts of fun modes to try whether you’re playing by yourself or with friends and family. You can play a normal game of UNO in Free Play, take on tricky challenges in Tournament Mode or get together with other gamers for a shared experience in Multiplayer Mode!

The controls are simple and intuitive, whether it’s the WiiWare or Nintendo DSiWare version you’re playing. Use the Wii Remote to select your card on the screen with WiiWare and the stylus if you’re playing on the Touch Screen with your Nintendo DSi!

Once you’ve got the controls in hand, use the Nintendo DSi cameras or your Mii characters on Wii to fully customise your appearance in the game and take on opponents from all over the world! Whether you’re brand new to the game or a seasoned pro, there’s nothing like a classic card game to bring out the competitive spirit in everyone!

The Rules of Play

The basic idea is to get rid of all your cards by matching a card in your hand to the one that was played before you. You can match by colour or number, or you can play one of several special “Action” cards, which can have a disastrous effect on the next player’s turn and help you get ahead! Once you get down to one card, you have to shout “UNO” to warn the other players that the winning post is in your sight!

Action cards include:

‘Reverse’ – this reserves the direction of play until another Reverse card is played

‘Wild’ –Wild cards can be played after any other card colour

‘Skip’ – when this card is played, the next player is skipped, meaning he or she loses a turn.

You can also vary the rules you play with the Custom Rules option. Toggle various rules on and off to make the game more or less complicated as the mood takes you! For example, with the “Jump-In” rule, if you have exactly the same card as the top card on the discard pile, you can play it without having to wait for your turn! Another fun rule is “UNO 7-0” – using this rule means that every time a 0 is played, everyone has to give their entire hand of cards to the next player. If a 7 is played, meanwhile, that player must exchange cards with a player of their choice. Mix and match and see what sort of crazy games you can create!

When playing the WiiWare version, use the intuitive controls of the Wii Remote to select a card by pointing at the screen and push the A Button to confirm your choice. If someone forgets to call “UNO” when they only have one card left, you can challenge them with the B Button!

With the Nintendo DSiWare version, you can use the stylus to interact directly with the cards on the Touch Screen. Tap the cards to browse through them and double tap to play the card of your choice. If you prefer a more traditional approach, then you can also play through a combination of buttons and the +Control Pad.

Game Modes

There are three exciting modes to try in UNO, both on Nintendo DSiWare and WiiWare:

Free/Quick Play
Select Free/Quick Play when you want a quick game. You can play against the computer or with friends and family in the same room. Choose to play standard rules or shake the game up by customising your rules!

Tournament
Tournament mode gives you a more in-depth experience of UNO which you can enjoy by yourself before taking on friends and family in Multiplayer mode. You’ll face a series of challenges where you have to reach specific objectives and win rewards, with the ultimate goal of becoming an expert UNO player! Play through multiple rounds of games with different rules and aim for the highest score to progress!

A record of how you’re doing is kept and you can view a variety of statistics, ranging from your total score to the number of Reverse cards played.

Multiplayer
Choose this option if you want to play UNO with your friends!

With the WiiWare version, you can play with up to five friends on the same Wii console or online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection with players anywhere in the world! Jump straight into a game that has an existing set of rules, or host your own game and play the way you decide. You can also set the game so you play only with people whom you’ve exchanged Friend Codes with. And if you own the Wii Speak accessory*, you can even talk to your friends - and see who shouts “UNO” first!

*Please note that the Wii Speak accessory is sold separately and is not required to play UNO.

The Nintendo DSiWare version has a thrilling multiplayer mode via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection that allows you to experience all the enjoyment of playing UNO with people all over the world! For a truly immersive experience, use the microphone to call out “UNO” for real! Meanwhile, with DS Wireless Play, you can invite up to three of your friends who also own the game to play together locally and decide between normal rules or your own creation with the Custom Rules option.
