Surviving the Planet

To some, 30 days feels like an eternity. For Olimar, the end of 30 days could send him to eternity. But the Captain knows how to move freight, and with the fearless Pikmin at his side, he will make the most of the secrets he learns on the planet to make every second count – and make sure they’re not his last.

Cutting Grass

At first, the way the Pikmin lag behind like a lost puppy is cute to Olimar – cute until they really do get lost and he runs into a big Bulborb. Fully maturing a Pikmin to the flower state is the only way Pikmin can keep up with Olimar and give him the speed he needs. When Olimar can’t afford to leave Pikmin planted in the ground, he can take them for a walk in the grass, where often sweet Nectar can be found. One sip of it instantly blooms his slowpokes.

Bomb Rocks

Bomb Rocks are essential to bringing down stone gates and can do major damage to beasts. However, they can also do major damage to Olimar and any Pikmin not smart enough to stay away from an explosion – which is all Pikmin. When he needs a Pikmin to throw a bomb, Olimar can command his Pikmin to separate into groups. The Yellow Pikmin with bombs stand in a separate group from the other Yellow Pikmin. He should then choose those few Yellow Pikmin to come with him, throw the Pikmin to place the bombs and then call them back to get out of the way. At the very least, this minimises the damage other Pikmin will take from bomb blasts.

Multitasking

Because Olimar can have up to 100 Pikmin with him at all times, it’s important to his livelihood to keep them all working. However, he also recognizes each Pikmin’s strengths and weaknesses, which is why multitasking becomes that much more important. For example, for each 100 Pikmin he has, 30 can be ordered to construct a bridge, 30 to tear down a wall and the rest can clear the area of beasts or work to make more Pikmin. It’s true that the more Pikmin working on a project, the faster a project gets done. However, as the game wears on, more and more Pikmin reserves will be needed if disaster strikes when running up against the big beasts of the game.

Practice with Challenge Mode

Once all three colours of Onions are discovered, Olimar can test his Pikmin reproduction skills in Challenge Mode. Separate from his adventure, Challenge Mode calls on Olimar to produce as many Pikmin as possible in one day. Each location is full of beasts, as well, so without superior battle skills, Olimar will start losing as many Pikmin as he grows.
