Remastered Graphics
The power of Nintendo 3DS has allowed for the graphics of the original title to be fully remastered, making them more immersive than ever before, while staying faithful to the world millions of players have come to love. This title is exclusive to Nintendo 3DS, so the entire game is now in stereoscopic 3D, allowing you to really feel the depth of this wonderful setting as you play.
Analogue and Motion Controls
The Circle Pad of Nintendo 3DS allows players to control the motion of the game’s main character, Link, with analogue controls, just like in the original Nintendo 64 game, but this time around, players can use motion controls in places too! Several items in the game (like the Hookshot or Fairy Slingshot) need to be aimed precisely, and players can use the Circle Pad to do so or have fun using motion controls: the Nintendo 3DS gyro sensor allows players to physically move their system to take aim!
Touch Screen Menus
The menu system of the game is now located at your fingertips, on the Touch Screen! Navigating is a breeze, just tap away on the simple, intuitive menu subscreens and you’re sorted in a jiffy! Examining maps, assigning Button items or selecting Gear items takes mere seconds!
Game Notes on Nintendo 3DS
With so much going on in Hyrule, it’s sensible to scribble down things to investigate later with Game Notes, as you’re playing. Whenever you see something that you think you might forget about, press the HOME Button to suspend your software, launch Game Notes, and make a convenient record to come back to later!
Hints
This 3D incarnation of the game has a built-in hint system - if you’re in dire need, seek out one of the two special Sheikah Stones in the game to view visions which will show you some very helpful things indeed!
Don’t mix up the Sheikah Stones with the Gossip Stones that are all over Hyrule – there are only two of these special stones! One of which can be found next to Link’s home, the other is hidden somewhere else…
Extra Modes
Now players can enjoy the remastered version of the Nintendo 64 original - as well as extra modes - in glasses-free 3D! This title also includes The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Master Quest, which takes you through the same story but offers different challenges along the way. Even Master Quest veterans who think they know Hyrule off by heart are in for a treat - as the entire game map has now been mirrored!
The dungeons in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Master Quest differ in many ways from the main game: not only will you meet tough enemies sooner than you're used to, but objects will be hidden in completely different locations, there are new puzzles and the dungeons are remixed so you'll need to figure them out anew! It's not for the faint hearted!
You'll need to carefully examine every area from scratch for unexpected additions, and be prepared to set your sights on completely new targets in order to progress...
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D also features Boss Challenge, giving players the option to take on bosses that they have beaten before – and even letting those with nerves of steel take on all of the bosses in the game in one continuous battle!
Storm clouds, heavy with their burden of darkness, gather around the kingdom of Hyrule. The peaceful citizens of the land know nothing, but there are others who sense the growing disquiet; they can feel that the realm teeters on the precipice of a great evil. The sleep of those special few, once blissful, is now troubled with nightmares…
Visions twist in the dreams of Link, the ‘boy without a fairy’ who lives among the children of the forest. In his slumber Link sees a stormy night with rain thrashing in fat drops on a vast plain. A sinister man, pursuing a beautiful young Princess who rides hastily to escape him.
From his reverie, Link is awoken by Navi, a fairy messenger from the Great Deku Tree: the venerable forest guardian would speak with Link at once. The Great Deku Tree tells Link that it is dying, cursed by a wicked man of the desert. This evil man is on an ceaseless quest to enter the Sacred Realm connected to Hyrule, for in that Sacred Realm lies a divine relic of great power: the Triforce.
The withering guardian of nature entreats Link and Navi to stop the wicked man: their first step is to leave the safety of their peaceful forest home and seek out the Princess of Destiny...
Our hero travels to Hyrule Castle, meeting Princess Zelda, who is revealed to be the one that he seeks. Princess Zelda shows Link that the dark figure haunting his dream was Ganondorf, leader of the Gerudo. She explains that the Triforce has the power to grant the wishes of its bearer, but that a wish made by one with an evil heart will bring absolute destruction – and that Ganondorf’s blackened heart is set upon it.
So begins Link’s story - he must protect the Triforce, unravel Ganondorf’s evil deeds and save the land of Hyrule! What follows is a journey of friendship, valour, courage and gruelling battles; a fable of the sweetest meetings and noblest partings.
This tale will chart a course across the ages, but if you desire the rest of the story, you must live it yourself and become the legendary Hero of Time…
Hyrule
Hyrule is a beautiful kingdom, home to many different peoples and populated by vibrant, expressive characters that will make you smile. Hyrule Field serves as the heart of the realm, with a variety of horizon lines stretching off in all compass directions from this huge central meadow. There’s much to explore, with the corners of the map housing an arid desert, active volcano, lush forest, and vast lake, among others.
At a certain point in the game you’ll gain the ability to travel back and forth in time; in the past, Link is a child, but in the future, he's all grown up, and the places that you knew before will have undergone quite a transformation! It’s up to you to explore Hyrule thoroughly in order to see how the world has changed.
The ability to travel through time brings a whole new complexion to your quest: in order to save Hyrule, you’ll need to get to know its nooks and crannies, taking note of its mysteries. There may be things that you can do in the past which might have an effect on the world of the future; there are many places in the world that you may not be able to get to at first, but will prove possible to reach later, much later…
Dungeons
Saving the world from Ganondorf’s threat will take you far into the forgotten corners of the world; on your travels you’ll explore and cleanse the darkness from many dungeons and sacred temples, regaining artefacts that will help you fight Ganondorf. Full of locked doors, brainteasing riddles and malevolent enemies, you’ll need all your wits, courage and combat skills to figure out the way through each dungeon to the dreadful boss monsters who guard the prize you seek, and finally, to victory…
Puzzles
As well as regular trials of your combat prowess, your observation, logic and puzzle-solving skills will be constantly tested - within dungeons and without. These mental challenges will come in many flavours, with environmental puzzles, tests of logic, stealth, strategy, tactics, even memory!
Dungeons are places where you can find droves of enemies and conundrums, but there are plenty of brainteasers in the outside world to solve too. Seek out the challenges that are dotted around the world - you never know, you might get something good as a reward!
Link:
A young boy who lives with the Kokiri, the children of the forest. Though each of his brethren has their own fairy companion, Link has none – until he meets Navi. Courageous, intrepid and with a good heart, Link has what it takes to go up against a great evil.
Navi:
A helpful fairy asked by the Great Deku Tree to guide Link and offer help in the trials ahead. Sometimes bossy, but always honest, her counsel inevitably provides some helpful nugget of information.
Epona:
As a foal at the Lon Lon Ranch, Epona is shy and wild, running away when people approach her. However, Epona takes a liking to Link, and when she grows up into a beautiful mare, she becomes his trusty steed. Link learns a special way to call Epona, and she will come to his side whenever he needs her.
Zelda:
The Princess of Destiny spoken of by the Great Deku Tree. Zelda is the kind, youthful Princess of Hyrule and keeper of the Ocarina of Time. Protective of her peaceful kingdom and its people, Zelda senses Ganondorf’s evil intentions and enlists Link’s help to stop him.
Ganondorf:
The dark-hearted King of the Gerudo, a tribe of thieves who live in the Gerudo Desert. Ganondorf is a dark sorcerer and a callous warlord who will stop at nothing to obtain the sacred Triforce. At the beginning of the story Ganondorf has cast a death curse on the benevolent forest guardian (the Great Deku Tree) but his treachery runs ever deeper…
Sheik:
One of the last surviving Sheikah in the land: the Sheikah were a race of secretive, powerful warriors loyal to the Royal Family of Hyrule. Sheik is a powerful fighter with great knowledge of history, legend and the land of Hyrule, who provides assistance to the powers of good repeatedly over the course of Link’s adventures. One question remains: just who is this enigmatic ally?
Controls
In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, you move Link around and interact with the world primarily by using the Circle Pad and the buttons of the Nintendo 3DS system, while the Touch Screen is used to manage your inventory, assign Button items and check maps.
Movement
To walk, run, swim, climb ladders, pull up onto platforms or jump off the edge of something, all you need is the Circle Pad! Slide it a little bit to move slowly, or slide it further from the centre-point to move faster!
Interacting and Using Items
Moving blocks, opening chests and more are all accomplished by pressing the A Button. But how can one little button do all this? The function of the A Button changes depending on how you can interact with something, which is shown by the Action Icon in the lower right of the 3D Screen. Keep your eyes peeled!
You can also assign items from your inventory to buttons or icons on the Touch Screen – then simply tap the button or icon to use the assigned item. Some items require you to aim: you can do this with the Circle Pad, or use motion controls by moving your Nintendo 3DS system itself.
Combat
Link mainly fights with a sword and shield in combat like classic heroes of yore – but the enterprising fellow can also use a variety of items! There’s an element of creativity to beating baddies, so make sure you try out a variety of items in combat, like bombs, the Boomerang and others too!
Combat is easy to get the hang of and made simple by targeting your enemy with the L Button. By ‘L-targeting’ in this way you focus on one enemy, so you will attack or defend against them specifically – allowing you to easily carry out all kinds of cuts, backflips and other cool moves. But you don’t have to L-target enemies if you don’t want to, you can still hit monsters even without doing so.
Epona
At a certain point in the game, you’ll be able to ride a faithful horse called Epona: simply mount up and use the Circle Pad to direct her path. Should you need a burst of speed, you can also spur your steed to go faster. However, she only has a certain amount of stamina, which will decrease if you ask her to gallop all the time. You have to strike the right balance between pushing Epona to go faster and allowing her to regain her stamina.

Collectables
The kingdom of Hyrule is a wonderful place, full of hidden treasures and odd little objects that a courageous adventurer can make use of – as a rule, collect everything and see what happens!
Rupees
You’ll come across lots of Rupees on your adventures – they are the main currency of Hyrule and can be exchanged in shops for all sorts of good things. Pick them up whenever you see them and keep your wallet stuffed - you never know when you’ll need them!
Recovery Hearts
The line of hearts along the top of the Touch Screen shows how much life energy you have, and this depletes when you are attacked by an enemy or fall from a height. You can refill your life energy by collecting Recovery Hearts which can be found in pots, undergrowth - in fact, all over the place!
It’s also possible to increase your total life energy by collecting Pieces of Heart; collect four to fill a new Heart Container. And if you do something really wonderful, you might just be rewarded with a Heart Container, which will increase your total life energy a little, instantly!
Golden Skull Tokens
See to the demise of those noisy Gold Skulltula critters and collect the Golden Skull Tokens they leave behind – get to know Hyrule well and you’re sure to find someone who can explain what these bizarre curiosities are for!
Inventory
While there are safe havens, the world is full of danger, and heading out into the wilderness will put you in the sights of monstrous enemies. To face all that the world will throw at you, you’ll need to kit out with the best equipment Rupees can buy…
Ocarinas
At first you’ll lay your hands on the Fairy Ocarina, and later the fabled Ocarina of Time, but you use both in the same way.
The world of Hyrule is a very musical one, and as you progress in the game you’ll learn many melodies which have surprising effects when played at the right time or place. Some songs will allow you to turn day to night, summon storms, or even warp to another location in Hyrule!
To play the Ocarina, select it and then press the buttons shown on the musical staff that comes up on screen, in the right order. Each melody is saved in the menu, so you can check how to play them at any time.
Gear Items
Over the course of the game you’ll use many different types of Gear items like swords, shields, tunics, (amongst others) and you’re sure to lay your hands on upgrades to these too! Tap the Touch Screen to go to the Gear subscreen and select the equipment that’s best for the job at hand.
Items
The land of Hyrule is littered with useful items, and while some can only be used by Link as a child, others may only be used by Link as an adult. Certain items may be harnessed as weapons, others will help you solve puzzles, still others will be mysteries in themselves at first…
Click the sample of items below to see what you can do with each one:
Deku Sticks:
These can be used as weapons, or as tapers to light unlit torches from lit ones.
Fairy Slingshot:
Your first projectile weapon, and like all such weapons you can aim it with the Circle Pad or by moving your Nintendo 3DS system. It’s great for taking down bad guys from a distance!
Boomerang:
This wonderful contraption will always come back, no matter where you throw it. It’s great for stunning enemies, collecting things, or activating switches from a distance – just make sure nothing’s blocking its path, or it’ll come back sooner than you might like.
Hookshot:
This is a bit like a grappling hook that you can aim precisely with the Circle Pad or by moving your Nintendo 3DS system – it’s perfect for pulling yourself up to places, or recovering far off items.
Bombs:
Use these in battle or just when trying to blow stuff up – you can carefully place them in position or lob them wantonly while you’re running!
Empty Bottles:
You can collect several of these throughout the game, and they can contain all kinds of liquids (Green Potions, Red Potions, nutritious Lon Lon Milk) or house a helpful Fairy who will sort you out when your life energy is depleted. Who knows what other uses you might find for a humble Empty Bottle?
