Sight Training: Enjoy Exercising and Relaxing Your Eyes

System: Nintendo DS Release date: 23/11/2007

What is Sight Training?

Sight Training: Enjoy Exercising And Relaxing Your Eyes was developed in co-operation with Dr Hisao Ishigaki of the Aichi Institute of Technology, an expert in the field of visual training who has developed sight training programmes used by professional athletes. He identified five different aspects of visual ability.

"You use many kinds of visual abilities in daily life. Identifying several objects in a wide range of vision at once, correctly recognising moving objects and so on make up your ability to see. In other words, you could say your visual ability is the accuracy and agility of your eyes. In this game we call your visual ability 'Focus Ability', and aim to improve it through training."

Using both screens of your Nintendo DS to put your Focus Ability to the test, Sight Training is simple to use and controlled almost entirely by tapping the Touch Screen with the stylus.

The software will present you with an Eye Age*, and stimulate you with a training programme to use the five different aspects of your vision and reduce that Eye Age score to the perfect Eye Age of 20.

*The Eye Age in Sight Training is a score allocated to you based on your performance in the various exercises included in the software.

The Five Aspects of Focus Ability

The five different aspects of visual ability come into play in your everyday life, even if you are not aware of them. Therefore we provide you with an overview of all five aspects, including situations where they are put to use.

Dynamic Visual Acuity

Dynamic Visual Acuity relates to your ability to see moving objects clearly. Higher Dynamic Visual Acuity helps you to better recognize and keep track of moving objects. Sports like volleyball, baseball and boxing all call on you to use your Dynamic Visual Acuity.

Eye Movement

This aspect of your vision relates to the ability to move your eye rapidly and pick up a lot of visual information quickly. This aspect of your vision can be trained by moving your eyes quickly or by making large, dynamic movements. This can be an important ability for daily life: when reading, for example.

Momentary Vision

Momentary Vision is linked to the ability to grasp a large amount of visual information in an instant. Activities like opening a newspaper and taking in a rough impression of the page layouts is an example of Momentary Vision in action.

Peripheral Vision

Having good peripheral vision means you have a broad field of vision and can see things outside of your visual focus more quickly. Good peripheral vision is helpful when driving a car, for example.

Hand-Eye Co-ordination

This aspect of your vision relates to the ability to judge visual information quickly and translate it into accurate hand movements. This aspect of the vision is particularly important when playing sports.

The Eye Age Check

Check your Eye Age

When you get started in Sight Training you will take an Eye Age Check to determine your in-game Eye Age. The Eye Age Check will give you an idea of how much work still needs done to help you on your way to reaching the ultimate Eye Age of 20 and includes a mixture of some of the many exercises that appear in the Sight Training.

Daily Training

The software's Daily Training function offers you two different options:

  • Today's Recommended Training
Because it keeps track of how you are progressing with your daily eye workouts, Sight Training will give you a recommended set of Daily Training exercises to do that focus on improving your results in specific areas and reducing your overall Eye Age score. You can choose to follow the recommended programme of exercises or set your own custom routine.

  • Custom training
If you don’t opt for doing the recommended Daily Training, you can set your own routine by returning to all the core exercises and sports training challenges you have unlocked. When you first start using Sight Training you will be able to try out three of the Sports Training exercises and five of the Core Training exercises. The other exercises will be unlocked as you progress.

Chart your Progress

As you work your way through the exercises in Sight Training and continue to get better at them, an Eye Age Graph showing your Personal Data will be kept to chart your progress over time. Up to four people can save an Eye Age Record to work on in Sight Training, introducing a competitive edge to your Daily Training!

*The Eye Age in Sight Training is a score allocated to you based on your performance in the various exercises included in the software.

Relaxing your eyes

Though training can be beneficial, it is equally important to provide relief.

Our eyes can be put under a lot of strain as we go about our daily life, but how often do you actually make a conscious effort to relax them? The Eye Relaxation techniques in Sight Training encourage you to take the strain off your eyes by carrying out a series of simple exercises. These exercises are clearly explained and can prove helpful in combating the everyday pressures your eyes are subjected to.
