Little King's Story

System: Wii Release date: 24/04/2009

How great a job would being a king be? Ordering your peasants around while reclining majestically on a velvet throne with a flagon of claret to sup on? Ha ha – you fools!! It‘s a tad more complicated than that, as you’ll find out in the stunning Little King’s Story on Wii!

It’s bad enough being forced to be a king just because your Dad happens to be one. Imagine if you became a king totally and unequivocally by mistake? Enter Corobo – a shy and lonely little boy, who enjoys wandering around the forest in his spare time. One day, he happens across a shiny gold crown sitting invitingly on the forest floor. Does he succumb to the lure of this glittery headpiece worth more riches than he has ever dreamt of? Yes, of course he does. And lo-and-behold, a little king is born!

Little King’s Story is a hilarious strategy/role-playing game (with a healthy dose of exploration and adventure) that challenges you, as Corobo, to turn your pitiful one-horse-town of a kingdom into the most successful and sprawling realm of all time. You begin in a tiny hamlet, where you realise, to your despair, that the few villagers you can call your countrymen have less of a work ethic than a three-toed sloth. Time to get them moving! Handily, your new status appears to work wonders on the townsfolk and you discover you can charm them into doing anything you need!

And you’ll need lots of different subjects for lots of different tasks! What about some miners to dig for treasure to fill the stately coffers? You’re going to need money to build more houses and a grand castle, not to mention builders! Naturally, a king will be eager go out and explore the world around him, so you’ll also need a hand-picked team to support you on your quests, which might include demolition experts for any obstacles in your path or trusty soldiers to protect you from the deadly monsters you’ll encounter. And like any good monarch, it doesn’t take long before you become remarkably attached to your subjects, so you need to do your best not to sacrifice them too readily!

Luckily, you have a right-hand man who‘ll assist you in any way he sees fit. The rapacious bull knight Howser might not be the advisor you were expecting, but you’ll be eternally grateful for his wise words, even if his steed appears to be…a cow called Pancho. Outside your immediate realm lie seven other kingdoms, ripe for invasion. Each kingdom has a very different look and culture with equally disparate kings to take on. It’ll certainly be a strategical achievement to unify all seven kingdoms and rule the world….

Created by a team of developers involved in other classic series such as Dragon Quest and Harvest Moon, Little King’s Story is a role-playing game like no other. The graphics have a dreamy, other-worldly quality, which is both fresh and utterly captivating. The soundtrack punctuates the action perfectly and presses you on to ever more epic deeds. There are scores of side-quests to tackle and quirky characters to converse with, making your choice of how to spend your days all the trickier. Ready to step up and wear the crown yet?
